This one with the lyrics
One of the most beautiful songs on Rome, in my opinion; the singer has to sing it in a quite high register, but (still IMHO) can make it sound really well. The lyrics do not make complete sense if taken literally, but I give complete credit to the poetic inspiration. That said, I found it pretty hard to translate something that is not meant to make strict logical sense but rather to evoke an atmosphere of old richness which is coming to present troubles, but, as usual, that is what I can issue for today and that's it (no, I'll try to refine it a bit in due time).
Roman holydays
| Roma dove sei? | Rome, where are you? | |
| Eri con me | You were with me | |
| oggi prigione tu | today you are a prison | |
| prigioniera io | and I am your prisoner | |
| Roma antica città | Rome, ancient city | |
| ora vecchia realtà | but old as well | |
| non t'accorgi di me | you don't take notice of me | |
| e non sai | and you don't know | |
| che pena mi fai | How sorry I feel for you | |
| Ma piove il cielo sulla città | But the sky is falling down on the city | |
| tu con il cuore nel fango | and your heart is in the drowning in the mud | |
| l'oro e l'argento le sale da thè | gold, silver and tea parlours | |
| paese che | you are just a country | |
| non ha più campanelli | that doesn't have any fresh attractives | |
| Poi dolce vita che te ne vai | The sweet life is passing away | |
| sul Lungotevere in festa | on parties along the Tiber | |
| concerto di viole e mondanità | a concert of violas and a bit of high life | |
| profumo tuo | that is your flavour | |
| di vacanze romane | of a roman holyday | |
| Roma bella tu | Rome, you are so beautiful | |
| le muse tue | but your inspiration now | |
| asfalto lucido | is just in the shiny asphalt | |
| "Arrivederci Roma" | "Goodbye Rome" | |
| monetina e voilà | throw your coin and voila' | |
| la tua parte la fai | you play your part | |
| ma non sai che pena mi dai | but you don't know how sorry I feel for you | |
| Ma Greta Garbo di vanità | You are as vain as Greta Garbo | |
| tu con il cuore nel fango | and your heart is lying in the mud | |
| l'oro e l'argento le sale da thè | gold, silver and tea parlours | |
| paese che | you are a country | |
| non ha più campanelli | without any fresh attractiveness | |
| poi dolce vita che te ne vai | then, sweet life who goes away | |
| sulle terrazze del Corso | in the terrazzas in the Corso | |
| "Vedova allegra" maitresse dei caffè | "Vedova allegra" and host of coffee bars | |
| profumo tuo | that is your flavour | |
| di vacanze romane | of a Roman holyday | |
| Ma piove il cielo sulla città | But the sky is falling on the city | |
| tu con il cuore nel fango | And your heart is lying in the mud | |
| tu con il cuore nel fango | And your heart is lying in the mud |
