This one with the lyrics

One of the most beautiful songs on Rome, in my opinion; the singer has to sing it in a quite high register, but (still IMHO) can make it sound really well. The lyrics do not make complete sense if taken literally, but I give complete credit to the poetic inspiration. That said, I found it pretty hard to translate something that is not meant to make strict logical sense but rather to evoke an atmosphere of old richness which is coming to present troubles, but, as usual, that is what I can issue for today and that's it (no, I'll try to refine it a bit in due time).

Roman holydays

Roma dove sei?Rome, where are you?
Eri con meYou were with me
oggi prigione tutoday you are a prison
prigioniera io and I am your prisoner
Roma antica cittàRome, ancient city
ora vecchia realtàbut old as well
non t'accorgi di meyou don't take notice of me
e non saiand you don't know
che pena mi faiHow sorry I feel for you
Ma piove il cielo sulla cittàBut the sky is falling down on the city
tu con il cuore nel fangoand your heart is in the drowning in the mud
l'oro e l'argento le sale da thègold, silver and tea parlours
paese cheyou are just a country
non ha più campanellithat doesn't have any fresh attractives
Poi dolce vita che te ne vaiThe sweet life is passing away
sul Lungotevere in festaon parties along the Tiber
concerto di viole e mondanità a concert of violas and a bit of high life
profumo tuothat is your flavour
di vacanze romaneof a roman holyday
Roma bella tuRome, you are so beautiful
le muse tuebut your inspiration now
asfalto lucidois just in the shiny asphalt
"Arrivederci Roma""Goodbye Rome"
monetina e voilà throw your coin and voila'
la tua parte la faiyou play your part
ma non sai che pena mi daibut you don't know how sorry I feel for you
Ma Greta Garbo di vanità You are as vain as Greta Garbo
tu con il cuore nel fangoand your heart is lying in the mud
l'oro e l'argento le sale da thègold, silver and tea parlours
paese cheyou are a country
non ha più campanelliwithout any fresh attractiveness
poi dolce vita che te ne vaithen, sweet life who goes away
sulle terrazze del Corsoin the terrazzas in the Corso
"Vedova allegra" maitresse dei caffè "Vedova allegra" and host of coffee bars
profumo tuothat is your flavour
di vacanze romaneof a Roman holyday
Ma piove il cielo sulla città But the sky is falling on the city
tu con il cuore nel fango And your heart is lying in the mud
tu con il cuore nel fango And your heart is lying in the mud
