Tangent aside

I really liked this bit from Sippican Cottage's musing on the automaker bailout, even though it's not much to do with the automaker bailout:

I checked the weather on the Internet. I honestly don't understand why anyone would watch a lunatic waving his arms at a green screen talking about someone else's weather. But then again, he's on a broadcast that has brittle-looking clothes horses reading a bad newspaper slowly. Kinda a matched set. You must think you're going to live to be a thousand if you've got time to watch a news broadcast. It was below freezing, barely, the night before.

Continuing in that theme and so forth

I posted this before, I think, but that old web site has shuffled off this mortal coil, and well, I wouldn't want this to get lost to the sands of time.

From the Crash Davis Files

From this article about a single-A Mariner's pitcher Andrew Barb and from the Department of I Am Easily Amused:

Although Barb said he has yet to regain full velocity on his fastball, he is off to a good start with a 2-1 record and 2.05 earned-run average in 30-2/3 innings, not including a scoreless inning in the Midwest League All-Star Game.

He has 41 strikeouts and 12 walks. Barb said he has always had good strikeout-to-walk ratios, and he has a simple explanation for it.

"I know that strikeouts are good and walks are bad," he said, "so I try to do one and avoid the other."

[...]

"I didn't care if it was as a catcher or as a pitcher, I just wanted a chance," he said.

[...]

"I was playing catch with one of the trainers, and I couldn't even concentrate because I was looking all around, taking in everything, from the seats to the field," he said. "It would be a surreal experience to someday be playing there."

"We gotta play it one day at a time." Previously, Interview with a Search Engine.

oh ho ho

Someone's been watching too much BBC America

Overheard by a group of lawyers walking through the tunnel connecting the metro to the Marriott Gateway in Crystal City:

A young girl and an older man, perhaps her father, were passing through the doors on their way to the Crystal City Marriott Gateway. The little girl points to a sign which reads, "No Solicitors."

Little girl: "What does 'No Solicitors' mean?"
Older man: "Oh, that they don't accept solicitors coming through here."
Little girl: "What's a solicitor?"
Older man: "Oh... A solicitor is someone like a lawyer."
